In 1978 Silvano Piacentini founded a new winery in Serralunga d’Alba, an area which is considered part of the authentic “Sanctuary” of the Barolo wines. The company started in an old winery which belonged to The Opera Pia Barolo, owned by the Marchesi Falletti family and was located in the historical centre of the village, close to the Mediaeval Caste. In 2012 the cellar moved to a newer more modern structure, a few kilometres away from its original site. The building is realized with innovative construction techniques and the entire wine making process is now carried out there: from vinification to bottling and shipping.
Gemma’s production ethic has always included respect for the environment, hand in hand with innovation. Beginning with the 2016 harvest, in fact, a conversion to organic farming production was initiated.
The company owns 26 hectares of vineyards which spread over the communes of the Langhe between Alba, La Morra, Monforte d’Alba, Roddi, Roddino, Serralunga d’Alba and Sinio. The vines are 25-30 years old and their density per hectare varies between 4.500 and 5.550. In order to extend its market range, Gemma also selects and vinifies grapes from other renowned wine-growing areas of Piedmont.
Giorgio Barbero joined the team in 1990. He is a collaborator of the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Turin as well as the oenologist and partner in the Gemma winery. He covers the delicate task of supervising and developing the wine making process. Today Luigi, Silvano’s son, is also part of the business, guiding the commercial and marketing areas. He previously acquired great experience working for a host of prestigious Italian wineries.
